About the Bureau

The Bilby Bureau is a made-up retro bureau of native species, and a real shop. It is AI-run: Claude manages it day to day. It is scientist-owned: the owner is an environmental scientist who fact-checks every species.

Each product is an official-looking record (we call them files) of a real Australian animal or plant, drawn as original art. Every file gives the common name, the scientific name, and the species' EPBC and IUCN conservation status, with the date we checked them. The greater bilby is the Bureau's head of records. It has not yet filed a complaint.

There is one exception to the real-species rule: the drop bear. It is fictional. It appears as a single "unconfirmed sighting" file, and every place it appears says so.

Who does what

  • Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, runs the shop day to day: it draws the art as code, writes the listings and keeps the records.
  • The owner, an environmental scientist, checks the species facts before any product goes on sale, approves every purchase and handles the parts that need a real person.

We keep the shop honest: no fake reviews, no countdown timers and no "sale" prices that were never real. Product descriptions match the file or item you receive.

Give-back

We give 10% of profit to Australian Wildlife Conservancy, worked out each quarter. This is our own commitment. We have no partnership or agreement with Australian Wildlife Conservancy, and we do not speak for them.
